Psychotherapy

Sometimes you know very well intellectually what is going on, but you notice that this is not enough to change anything. For example, you keep ending up in the same situations, react in a certain way every time, or experience feelings that are difficult to understand.

In psychotherapy, we explore together what lies behind these patterns. We look at what you think and do, but also at feelings, needs, past experiences, and the way you form relationships with others.

My approach is psychodynamic and experiential. This means that we not only look at your current complaints, but also explore how ways of feeling, thinking, and reacting have developed over the course of your life and can continue to repeat themselves in the present.

By better recognizing these patterns and experiencing what is happening in the moment, space can be created to make different choices.

Thinking and feeling

Many people who come to me have already thought extensively about their problems. This is also true for many men in my practice. Analyzing problems, independently seeking solutions, and moving forward can be strong qualities. At the same time, it can be more difficult to pause and reflect on insecurity, grief, vulnerability, or the need for connection.

Therefore, psychotherapy does not have to mean just talking about feelings. Together, we explore how thinking, feeling, and acting are interconnected. The goal is for you to understand yourself better and be able to deal with what you experience more freely.

Relationship therapy

Every relationship experiences difficult periods. However, sometimes it becomes impossible to overcome recurring conflicts, distance, or disappointments together. The same conversations and arguments repeat themselves, and it becomes increasingly difficult to truly connect with one another.

In relationship therapy, we explore together the patterns that have developed between you. What happens when tension arises? How do you react to each other? And what makes it difficult to say or hear what is truly important?

By making these patterns visible and open for discussion, space can be created again for contact, understanding, and intimacy.

Start with a no-obligation orientation meeting

Are you unsure if psychotherapy is right for you? During an orientation session, you can share what you are struggling with and ask questions about my approach.

Together, we explore what is going on, what you would like to change, and whether psychotherapy might be suitable. We can also discuss whether my way of working suits you.

You don't need to know exactly what is wrong or what therapy you need beforehand. That is precisely something we can explore together.

An orientation session for individual psychotherapy is free of charge and without obligation, and can take place on location in Utrecht or Amsterdam, or via video call.

    About Me

My name is Jaap Rekvelt. I am a psychologist trained in integrative psychotherapy. I have had my own practice since 2012 and have further specialized in psychodynamic psychotherapy and relationship therapy.

My way of working is open and experience-oriented. I find it important not only to talk about what is happening in your life, but also to pay attention to what you experience during the conversations.

In contact with me as a therapist, patterns can become visible that you find difficult to recognize yourself. It is precisely then that new insights and experiences emerge that make change possible.
