By Václav Havel
Deep within ourselves we carry hope.
If she's not there, she's nowhere.
Hope is a consciousness
and it does not stand or fall with what happens in the world.
To hope is neither to predict nor to foresee.
Hope is in our soul, engraved in our heart,
lies at anchor beyond the horizon.
Hope,
in this deep and powerful meaning,
is different from being happy about what's going well
or whether you would like to commit yourself to something that will certainly be successful.
Hope is the art of working on something because it is good,
not only because it has a chance of success.
Hope is not optimism,
not the belief that something will turn out well.
To hope is to know for sure that something is meaningful,
regardless of the outcome.
